“GESO a pie de cama”: Improving obstetric care and safety in Spain using Persei vivarium technology
by Ana Díaz-Roncero, November 27, 2024
Last week marked the launch of “GESO a pie de cama”, an initiative that complements all the projects of the Spanish Group for Obstetric Safety (GESO in Spanish). This time, it enables obstetricians, through a mobile application, to efficiently collect up-to-date data on maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality for each patient, as well as other relevant related information. The project, built with Persei vivarium technology, is driven by “GESO”, and promoted by Professor Dr. Óscar Martínez, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the HM Madrid Río Hospital.
“GESO a pie de cama” aims to evaluate how obstetric care is being provided in Spain, the training of healthcare professionals, and the health habits of pregnant population. This will help identify areas for improvement in the care process and implement specific measures to address them.
To do this, various research projects were conducted, beginning with a study focused on analyzing the current situation in vacuum-assisted births, evaluating the impact of simulation training and the implications of this technique on associated complications. The principal investigator for this study is Dr. María Rosa Vila Hernández, from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service at the Hospital of Santa Caterina.
This initial study will be joined in 2025 by one promoted by the “Fundación Mapfre” on driving habits among pregnant population. The aim is to gather evidence to raise awareness and provide safe measures for car use within this population group.
All of this is being carried out using the Caaring® mobile application, adapted for the use of the healthcare professional, which enables him or her to gather the information while the patient is in the hospital and then, later, to draw conclusions aimed at the optimization of obstetric training in Spain. It is hoped that in the first year “GESO a pie de cama” will benefit 70 hospitals, with the ultimate goal of improving care and, consequently, the safety of pregnant population and newborns.
