In 2020, 18.1 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed worldwide. In Spain alone, it is estimated that there could be <\/span>286,664 cases in 2024<\/span><\/b>, according to data from <\/span>REDECAN<\/span><\/a> (the Spanish Cancer Registry Network).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This high incidence, along with better survival rates for oncology patients thanks to multiple advances, has brought with it new challenges\u2014for patients, who <\/span>face challenges associated with diagnosis, treatment, and the psychological and social impacts of the disease<\/span><\/b>, as well as for the healthcare system as a whole, which experiences an <\/span>increased burden of care and use of resources<\/span><\/b>. In Spain, this translates to <\/span>annual costs of about <\/span><\/b>19.3 million euros, including direct medical and non-medical costs, along with indirect costs.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In this context, <\/span>how can Digital Health contribute to cancer treatment<\/span><\/b>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Among these benefits, adherence to treatment<\/span><\/b> is especially important, as that failure can impact the patient\u2019s progress or aggravate the patient\u2019s clinical situation.\u00a0In the specific case of cancer, the particularities of the disease like <\/span>secondary effects of treatments or changes in daily living habits<\/span><\/b> can cause a <\/span>higher probability that patients will decide to not follow medical treatment<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0In fact, in contrast to what is often thought, <\/span>the lack of adherence is relatively common in this type of patient, and can result in reduced response rates and higher medical expenses<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is here that <\/span>Digital Health can offer innovative solutions adapted to each patient and treatment<\/span><\/b> that, in addition to <\/span>facilitating follow-up between appointments<\/span><\/b>, <\/span>helps to maintain therapeutic adherence<\/span><\/b> by using personalized itineraries that guide the patient, and notify the healthcare professional in case of deviations. These tools are particularly useful if we consider that a <\/span>study about adherence in patients in oral oncology treatment<\/span><\/a> identified their <\/span>primary reasons for non-adherence as forgetting (50%) and toxicity (21%).<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Although the use of technology to help with adherence in oncology patients\u00a0is not new, as noted in the review <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Mobile Health in Adherence to Oral Anticancer Drugs\u201d,<\/span><\/i><\/a> until recently there was a lack of solid scientific support for its use in clinical practice, as the studies did not focus on the effectiveness of digital platforms. This has changed with the arrival of <\/span>Digital Therapeutics (DTx), software supported by scientific evidence that are demonstrating clinical benefits<\/span><\/b> in multiple diseases, cancer among them.
