Because of this, distance attendance at work or school no longer seems so strange to us. In the sphere of Digital Health, we have examples like medical applications, the use of QR codes for different healthcare processes, or telemedicine. This change has also come to research, with the <\/span><b>funding of Decentralized Clinical Trials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decentralized Clinical Trials are different from traditional trials in that <\/span><b>the participants do not have to come to the hospital, university, or research center where the study is being carried out<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this case, the participants receive the treatment at home, the <\/span><b>monitoring and tests that might be necessary are carried out remotely, and the patients themselves incorporate data relevant to the trial through a series of questionnaires.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011 one of the first<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1551714414000573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decentralized clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was carried out, replicating a previous clinical trial, but using a digital approach. Once finalized, no significant differences were observed in the result of that trial compared to the conventional trial. This began to show the viability of this type of study which, <\/span><b>in addition to providing reliable results, would offer some additional advantages.\u00a0 What would these advantages be?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to FDA Commissioner<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/speeches-fda-officials\/breaking-down-barriers-between-clinical-trials-and-clinical-care-incorporating-real-world-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Scott Gottlieb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those trials are <\/span><b>more agile and efficient.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On one hand, they facilitate recruitment, which allows for <\/span><b>more rapid implementation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the other hand, as mentioned in the article,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/full\/10.1016\/j.jacbts.2021.01.011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDecentralized Clinical Trials: The Future of Medical Product Development?\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they <\/span><b>reduce costs for the researchers and sponsors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by reducing the number of centers needed for the study, also improving the ability to react and make adjustments to the protocols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the patient\u2019s point of view, the main advantage is the <\/span><b>improvement in access<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That could have an especially <\/span><b>positive impact in studies focused on rare diseases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because of the high geographic dispersion of the participants, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/Reportajes\/Ensayos-clinicos-virtuales-en-tiempos-de-covid-19-y-mas-alla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vallivana Rodrigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researcher at the FISABIO Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, this type of trial allows the patient to incorporate data from his or her daily life, in a real-life context (<\/span><b>Real-World Data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), enabling the <\/span><b>generation of evidence that will help to improve the development of treatments and to adapt guidelines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including reducing the need to carry out post-approval safety studies,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appliedclinicaltrialsonline.com\/view\/fda-policies-support-shift-decentralized-clinical-trials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is all possible today with the use of <\/span><b>mobile applications, wearables, sensors, video calls and other devices that enable rapid and reliable distance monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
