This is what is known as <strong>Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs)<\/strong>. But do we know what value these data provide to professionals and the patient?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normally, when a patient is diagnosed with a disease, the first thing the patient wants to know is \u201cIs there a cure?\u201d and then, \u201cHow will I live, what will my quality of life be?\u201d as noted in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcatalyst.com\/insights\/unlocking-the-power-of-patient-reported-outcome-measures-proms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HealthCatalyst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that context, healthcare professionals are becoming more interested in understanding the <strong>patient\u2019s daily condition<\/strong>, so they are beginning to <strong>collect information directly from the patient, through PROs<\/strong>. PROs,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17034633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are <strong>\u201ca measurement of any aspect of a patient\u2019s health status (symptoms, quality of life, etc.) that comes directly from the patient (i.e. without the interpretation of the patient\u2019s responses by a physician or anyone else).<\/strong>\u201d These PROs are important in understanding whether the treatments and procedures produce a difference in the health and qualify of life of the patient, providing information about more than just effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main benefits of PROs is the improvement in clinical decision making, helping a medical professional to choose among similar treatments of the same effectiveness, enabling them to <strong>opt for those that help to improve the patient\u2019s qualify of life<\/strong> as much as possible. On the other hand, PROs also <strong>help empower the patient<\/strong>, allowing him or her to actively participate with regard to the disease, enabling the patient to understand and <strong>improve adherence to treatment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the goal of implementing the collection of PROs in clinical studies, hospital centers and other providers developed <strong>PROMs (Patient Reported Outcome Measures)<\/strong> defined, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/patientreportedoutcomes.ca\/what-are-pros\/proms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of British Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <strong>standardized and validated questionnaires completed by patients that measure their perception of their health status<\/strong>.
